Use private browsing
Opening an incognito or private window means the pages you visit are not saved in your browser history once you close it. Look for 'New incognito tab' or 'New private tab' in your browser menu.
Online Safety
If someone else has access to your phone or computer, a few small steps can reduce what they can see.
Opening an incognito or private window means the pages you visit are not saved in your browser history once you close it. Look for 'New incognito tab' or 'New private tab' in your browser menu.
In your browser settings, find History and delete the entries you do not want seen. Deleting everything at once can look unusual — clearing selected entries is often safer.
Set a PIN, pattern or fingerprint that other people in your home do not know, and turn off message previews on your lock screen.
Shared accounts, linked devices and backup apps can show your messages elsewhere. In WhatsApp, check Linked Devices and log out anything you do not recognise.
Family location apps, shared calendars and photo metadata can reveal where you are. Review which apps have location permission on your phone.
If you think your phone or computer is monitored, use a friend's device, a library computer or a workplace machine to look for help.
Do not wait to make your device safe first. Call SAPS on 10111, emergency services on 112, or the GBV Command Centre on 0800 428 428.
